What is an msp file and how do I open an msp file? Installing Adobe Reader from MSI and applying MSP update packages Copying the updated set to the network

This article was updated in July 2014 and belongs to a series of articles about installing programs in Active Directory. Despite the abundance of text, immediately look at the ending (on this page) - everything is too simple! Then read calmly and thoughtfully.

Task

Prepare an Adobe Reader package with all current updates for installation through Active Directory.

Secondary task: learn how to apply updates in the MSP format (.msp extension).

Initial data

As of 02/28/11, the current version of Adobe Reader is 11.0.7. Available for Russian version AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU.msi and update file AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp.

We will need to prepare an msi package (.msi), apply a patch (.msp) to it and copy the result to a network folder for further distribution using Active Directory.

1.Preparing an MSI package for applying the patch

Create a folder C:\Temp\Adobe and copy the files into it AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU.msi and update file AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp

Launch cmd and go to the created folder:

> cd C:\Temp\Adobe

Unpacking AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU.msi to the Updated folder:

> msiexec /a AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU.msi

The installer will start, agree and accept :) After this, the Updated folder will contain files for installation over the network. But this is still version 11.0.0. We need to update it.

2. Update the installation kit

> AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU.msi/p C:\Temp\Adobe\ AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp

This command will merge the existing set with the updates from the file AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp.

3. Copy the updated set to the network

Now we copy the Updated folder to the network and distribute the updated Adobe Reader 11.0.7 package to all users of the local network.

Putting everything together, I present the cmd console commands one after another, all three!

> cd C:\Temp\Adobe
> msiexec /a AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU. TARGETDIR=c:\Temp\Adobe\Updated
> msiexec /a c:\Temp\Adobe\Updated\ AdbeRdr11000_ru_RU./p C:\Temp\Adobe\ AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp

That's all. Words turned out to be much greater than action.

We hope we helped you resolve your MSP file problem. If you don't know where you can download an application from our list, click on the link (this is the name of the program) - You will find more detailed information on where to download the secure installation version of the required application.

A visit to this page should help you answer these or similar questions specifically:

  • How to open a file with the MSP extension?
  • How to convert an MSP file to another format?
  • What is the MSP file format extension?
  • What programs support the MSP file?

If, after viewing the materials on this page, you still have not received a satisfactory answer to any of the questions presented above, this means that the information presented here about the MSP file is incomplete. Contact us using the contact form and write what information you did not find.

What else could cause problems?

There may be more reasons why you cannot open the MSP file (not just the lack of an appropriate application).
Firstly- the MSP file may be incorrectly linked (incompatible) with the application installed to support it. In this case, you need to change this connection yourself. To do this, right-click on the MSP file that you want to edit, click the option "To open with" and then select the program you installed from the list. After this action, problems with opening the MSP file should completely disappear.
Secondly- the file you want to open may simply be damaged. In this case, it would be best to find a new version of it, or download it again from the same source (perhaps for some reason in the previous session the download of the MSP file did not finish and it could not be opened correctly).

Do you want to help?

If you have additional information about the MSP file extension, we will be grateful if you share it with users of our site. Use the form below and send us your information about the MSP file.

If you have installed on your computer antivirus program Can scan all files on your computer, as well as each file individually. You can scan any file by right-clicking on the file and selecting the appropriate option to scan the file for viruses.

For example, in this figure it is highlighted file my-file.msp, then you need to right-click on this file and select the option in the file menu "scan with AVG". When you select this option, AVG Antivirus will open and scan the file for viruses.

Sometimes an error may occur as a result incorrect software installation, which may be due to a problem encountered during the installation process. This may interfere with your operating system link your MSP file to the correct application tool, influencing the so-called "file extension associations".

Sometimes simple reinstalling Windows Installer can solve your problem by linking MSP with Windows Installer correctly. In other cases, problems with file associations may result from bad software programming developer and you may need to contact the developer for further assistance.

Advice: Try updating Windows Installer to the latest version to ensure you have the latest patches and updates.

This may seem too obvious, but often The MSP file itself may be causing the problem. If you received a file via an email attachment or downloaded it from a website and the download process was interrupted (such as a power outage or other reason), the file may become damaged. If possible, try getting a new copy of the MSP file and try opening it again.

Carefully: A damaged file can cause collateral damage to previous or existing malware on your PC, so it is important to keep your computer up-to-date with an up-to-date antivirus.

If your MSP file related to the hardware on your computer to open the file you may need update device drivers associated with this equipment.

This problem usually associated with media file types, which depend on successfully opening the hardware inside the computer, e.g. sound card or video card. For example, if you are trying to open an audio file but cannot open it, you may need to update sound card drivers.

Advice: If when you try to open an MSP file you receive .SYS file error message, the problem could probably be associated with corrupted or outdated device drivers that need to be updated. This process can be made easier by using driver update software such as DriverDoc.

If the steps do not solve the problem and you're still having problems opening MSP files, this could be due to lack of available system resources. Some versions of MSP files may require a significant amount of resources (e.g. memory/RAM, processing power) to properly open on your computer. This problem is quite common if you are using fairly old computer hardware and at the same time a much newer operating system.

This problem can occur when the computer is having trouble keeping up with a task because the operating system (and other services running in the background) may consume too many resources to open MSP file. Try closing all applications on your PC before opening Windows Installer Patch. Freeing up all available resources on your computer will provide you with the best conditions for attempting to open your MSP file.

If you completed all the steps described above and your MSP file still won't open, you may need to run equipment update. In most cases, even when using older versions of hardware, the processing power can still be more than sufficient for most user applications (unless you're doing a lot of CPU-intensive work, such as 3D rendering, financial/scientific modeling, or intensive multimedia work) . Thus, it is likely that your computer does not have enough memory(commonly called "RAM" or random access memory) to perform the task of opening a file.

You"re here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .msp. Files with the file extension .msp can only be launched by certain applications. It"s possible that .msp files are data files rather than documents or media , which means they"re not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .msp file?

The MSP is a file extension associated with Windows Installer Patch file used for updating Windows and Microsoft programs. The MSP file format and Windows Installer Patch were developed by Microsoft. It allows bug fixes, security updates and hotfixes. It can be opened with Windows Installer programs such as Hotfix.exe and Update.exe. MSP files are self-contained packages that contain the application changes and information regarding which versions of Windows are eligible for the patch. A patch can be installed individually specifically when an MSI already exists in the system. This means that a patch may contain an entire file or bit files needed to update the part file. An MSP file contains a minimum of two database transforms. The first database transforms updates of information while the second database adds the information. A patch package consists of Summary Information Stream, Transform Substorage, and a Cabinet File Stream. Files in MSP format can be opened with Microsoft Windows Installer in Microsoft Windows platforms.

how to open a .msp file?

Launch a .msp file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that"s meant to open your .msp file will open it. It"s possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It"s also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .msp files aren"t yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .msp file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a .msp file will open the correct application.

applications that open a .msp file

Microsoft Windows Installer

Microsoft Windows Installer

A Windows Installer patch (.msp file) is a self-contained package that has the updates to the application and describes which versions of the application can receive the patch. An application that has been established using the Microsoft Windows Installer can be advanced by reinstalling an updated installation package (.msi file), or by applying a Windows Installer patch (an .msp file) to the application. Patches handles at a minimum of two database transforms and can contain patch files that are saved in the cabinet file stream of the patch package. Servicing applications by distributing a Windows Installer patch, relatively than a complete installation package for the updated product can have advantages. A patch can handle an entire file or only the file bits necessary to update part of the file. This can enable the user to download an upgrade patch that is much smaller than the installation package for the entire product. An update using a patch can protect a user customization of the application thru the upgrade.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .msp files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .msp. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.

- Extension (format) is the characters at the end of the file after the last dot.
- The computer determines the file type by its extension.
- By default, Windows does not show file name extensions.
- Some characters cannot be used in the file name and extension.
- Not all formats are related to the same program.
- Below are all the programs that can be used to open the MSP file.
