Is it possible to charge a smartphone with a non-original charger? Is it possible to charge the phone with a non-original charger? Charging for iPhone and iPad is the same

Hi all! And especially for those people who have an iPad charger and who want to know - can it charge other Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPod? Indeed, an unprepared and, more importantly, careful user has too many questions about this whole situation. And here are the most common ones...

Is the iPad adapter suitable for iPhone and will there be any harm from it? Will expensive products break? Will the iPhone work less on one battery charge? Now we will try to understand all this in detail on our own, and we will also receive an official response from Apple, which will clear up all misunderstandings and draw a line under this discussion. It's time to start - let's go!

But first, let’s clarify what are the pros and cons of such a solution? Pros:

  1. iPhone charging time is reduced. Despite the fact that the native charger in the iPhone is 1 Ampere, this was done mostly for reinsurance, because the device itself can take a little more.
  2. So as not to carry several chargers with you.

I personally did not notice any disadvantages and Apple agrees with me (more on this below), but judging by the reviews on the Internet, some users experience a slight increase in the heating of the device. Of course, this is if we are talking about original accessories. There will be more problems with non-certified ones - they won’t charge, won’t connect, etc.

But let’s return to the main thing, why does the question voiced in the title of the article even arise? Because the chargers for these two devices are still different. Moreover, both in appearance and in the strength of the output current. For iPhone it is 1 Ampere, for iPad – 2 Ampere (larger battery – you need a more powerful power adapter).

But can it (the more powerful charger from the iPad) be used to constantly charge the iPhone battery and is this not dangerous? Of course yes. And here's why:

  • The output voltage of all iOS device charges is identical and equal to the voltage in the USB port ± 5 W. What is stated in the specifications is the maximum current that it will not necessarily produce.
  • Any Apple device has a special controller, thanks to which the iPhone simply will not “take” more than it should from charging the iPad.

By the way, here is a screenshot of Apple's official response. I think these guys can be trusted:

And finally, a little personal experience.

For many years I have not worried about this at all. I charge my iPhone and iPod (even Nano and Shuffle) with everything, including the power supply from the iPad. There were no problems with the batteries. The main thing is to use original accessories, but how and in what order to mix them is not important. But this is just my opinion :)

P.S. As I already wrote, there will be no problems, but it’s better to play it safe and “like” this article. Did you do it? Now you can safely charge your iPhone!

For the average person, charging is a cord, two contacts and a plug for the outlet. If everything were that simple, all charges would be the same. But have you noticed that with some devices your phone comes to life faster, with others – slower. The third charge is not suitable at all. We constantly lose them, forget them with friends or in a cafe. Once every six months the cable will definitely break down.

Chargers are one of the most necessary and popular accessories. We explain which charger to buy so you don’t go broke and it works.

A board with microcircuits is embedded inside modern cables; it determines the operation of the accessory in different modes: from charging to synchronization. Socket adapters have different characteristics and speeds.

Original charger: it will definitely work, but very expensive!

Who better than the manufacturer to know everything about his brainchild! The original charger suffers from only one drawback - its high price. 3,590 rubles for charging for a MacBook and a new generation iPhone is a robbery. And other brands set a high price bar. Both Samsung and Sony - from two thousand.

In Russian online stores, prices for analogues start at about 800 rubles. On Aliexpress - even 300-400 rubles. Add to this a branded cable for 1990 rubles - and you will get a fast charging kit for iPhone 8 for 10% of the cost of the smartphone itself.

Prices for accessories on the Apple website are steep, but the choice of alternatives is not as wide as that of Android competitors

In the kit, Apple includes its old slow charger and cable, which will charge the new iPhone by a maximum of 25-30% in 30 minutes. In the same half hour, the flagship from Samsung/Sony/Huawei will be half charged, and the battery capacity of Android devices is one and a half times higher. The desire to make money selling accessories overcame common sense.

Where to buy: in the official online store of the smartphone manufacturer or in the nearest official reseller store (not to be confused with the kiosk in the transition).

Chargers from “foreign” trusted companies: already cheaper

If the price scares you, you can buy a device from a “normal” manufacturer of universal accessories. For example, Belkin, Nillkin, Qi Wireless, Anker, SnowKids and others. See the assortment of retailers at the re:Store level. You will receive a guarantee that the characteristics (power figures, output current) correspond to the declared ones and a company guarantee. The same Belkin is among the certified Apple manufacturers.

For Android phones, official chargers are quite stylish and/or cute. You can use such chargers without fear for the safety of your gadget.

Where to buy: on the websites of device manufacturers or in hardware stores. Be sure to check that the charging company is the one you need. The price is already average: you can’t buy a charger from a famous manufacturer for less than 500 rubles.

Counterfeits and no-name chargers: better buy coffee with that money

Anything that costs roughly 100-500 rubles and is sold at a stall in the passage is a bad choice. Such chargers are divided into two types: counterfeits of expensive brands and no-name ones.

The purpose of fakes, of course, is to be similar to the original. Noname is some kind of miracle with an unpronounceable name that is clearly of Asian origin, like Olaudem crdc.

Such charges may suddenly contain other functions, such as a flashlight.

Manufacturers of well-known accessories are afraid of ruining their reputation. Counterfeits and nonames have nothing to worry about - there is no reputation.

In the case of Apple's lightning connector (and these are iPhones from 5 to 7 Plus), everything is completely bad. The iPhone will not charge and may display a message that the accessory is not supported. And after some time, about two weeks. It’s too late to return the charger to the store, and I’m too lazy to bother with hundreds of rubles.

With USB Type C and the still most common MicroUSB connector in Android, everything is simpler in terms of compatibility, but just as unreliable in terms of quality.

It is difficult for an inexperienced user to distinguish an original from a fake. Yes, the markings and the location of the contacts may differ, but few people know “how to do it correctly” in each specific accessory. Pay attention at least to spelling errors and the overall quality of workmanship - lack of polishing, crooked assembly, and of course - the suspiciously low price. The fake is here on the left (c) Photo icases.ua

Disadvantages of counterfeit chargers: discrepancy with the numbers on the label, the slowest charging, incompatibility with declared devices, and, of course, a short-lived controller.

The controller is an important part that protects the phone. This is a small set of transistors that are responsible for the fact that the smartphone will automatically turn off charging when it reaches 100%. Plus, the controller evaluates the supplied voltage and prevents overheating.

The problem is that cheap Chinese power adapters are made from dubious components. When the transistors burn out, your smartphone can receive a powerful incoming current charge and burn out. But you won’t be able to check in advance what quality the controller is in the charge.

Chargers with many connectors are less reliable than those with one. In addition, this is a clear sign of a cheap Chinese accessory. Branded chargers with multiple connectors also exist, but there are only a few of them.

Fire hazards and the risk of breaking a smartphone are not the only problems. The charging numbers may be stated alone, but in reality the current strength and voltage will not correspond to reality. About them - below.

Just something complicated: the higher the output current, the faster the charging

If you are used to charging your phone not from a laptop, but from an outlet, it is important to have a good power adapter (the same outlet to the cord). When choosing an adapter from a third-party manufacturer, focus on the original charger, or more precisely, on the current value “A”.

A few simple truths:

  • Current strength is measured in amperes. Always First of all, look for the marking of the Latin letter “A” on the charger;
  • Typically, a smartphone charger has a current of 1 ampere, less often: 1.2A, 2A, 2.4A;
  • Most smartphones require adapter sockets to charge power from 5W (W).

Many modern smartphones can charge much faster if you use a more powerful charger. In most cases it will come bundled with the exception of Apple and Sony.

The standard iPhone package (even those that support fast charging) includes a power adapter with a power of 5 W (or the Latin “W”) and an output current of 1 A. Standard charging with a current of 1 A will charge the iPhone 7/8 Plus for hours, and Samsung Galaxy S8 can handle it in an hour.

At the Apple Store you can buy a charger with a power of 12W, 29W, 61W and even 87W. The thickest adapters. The output current will be from 2.4 A, and such adapters are intended for Mac or iPad.

Don't be afraid that your phone may burn out: a special controller will limit the current to that which is supported by the phone, so you can safely use powerful charges.

If you have other manufacturer's equipment (computers, tablets) - use their chargers to achieve high speeds. A computer connected to a power outlet is itself a complex controller.

  • Do not buy chargers from dubious places and choose only certified manufacturers. They can be found according to the assortment in official retail such as Svyaznoy or re:Store, and not in a stall in the passage.
  • Test charging on site. Users of Android devices can indirectly determine the quality of charging - when connecting a bad charger, the OS will write “charging via USB,” and iPhone users may see the message “The accessory is probably not supported.” But this is not a guarantee that compatibility will remain in a month.
  • Logos and inscriptions must be applied evenly and on plastic, there shouldn't be a cheap sticker instead. There should be no errors in the writing, and the more markings on the parts, the more likely the adapter will be of high quality.
  • You can’t buy high-quality chargers for less than five hundred rubles..
  • Each device: tablet, smartphone, e-reader or laptop comes with its own chargers. At least that was the case until recently. Nowadays, most modern smartphones and tablets have a Micro USB connector, and this is becoming a standard. Against this background, the question arises: is it possible to charge all your gadgets through one charger?

Despite the fact that over time more and more chargers are produced according to a single standard, several types of chargers are still widespread:

    • Laptops. Unfortunately, we have not yet come up with a single standard for charging laptops and netbooks. There is no universal connector, which means that each device needs an individual charger.
    • 8-pin connectors(lightning connectors) for Apple gadgets. Since 2012, Apple has standardized on the 8-pin connector, and now all devices released after that year: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, iPad Nano, can be connected using a charger certified and developed by Apple.

Older Apple devices have a 30-pin connector, and for those who still have them, Apple produces lightning to 30 pin adapters.

    • micro USB chargers. All new smartphones, including Android and Windows Phone devices, come with a standard micro USB connector, so there is no need to select individual chargers for them, as for older mobile phones. To meet this standard, Apple offers Lightning connectors → Micro USB adapters.

Can I charge any device with a connector? Micro USB from any charger Micro USB?

In theory, every Micro USB charger can be plugged into a device with such a connector, which means it can be used for any device, be it a smartphone, tablet or even a laptop. Very convenient - if you buy a new smartphone or tablet, you can charge it with an old charger. The only difference is the voltage and current, but more on that later.

You can also charge the device from a laptop using a Micro USB→USB adapter.

    Dangerous chargers

The HP Chromebook 11 is the first laptop to use a Micro USB connector for charging. Most laptops require more power and cannot be charged this way.

But this laptop was also withdrawn from sale due to reports of overheating of the charger, which could cause a fire. An HP spokesperson advised users who purchased the HP Chromebook 11 not to use the original chargers that came with the device.

You can continue to use your laptop by charging it using one of the micro-USB chargers tested by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (US Standards and Certification Company), for example, from a tablet or smartphone.

You will easily recognize chargers that have been tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. - they have the “UL Listed” logo.

This means that the charger has been tested for safety and will not cause a fire or shock you. But in some cases, even proven chargers can cause trouble, namely when the device’s battery is faulty. So the cause of a fire can be either a non-original cheap charger or an equally cheap, uncertified battery.

    Voltage and current

All USB connectors are designed for a voltage of 5V. This means that you can safely connect the charger to the device via micro USB.

Another thing is the current strength. To charge the device faster, chargers increase the current, which is measured in amperes (A). The chargers that come with Android tablets are rated for higher amperage than similar devices for Android smartphones. For example, a tablet charger is rated at 2A, while a smartphone charger is only rated at 1A.

If you connect a smartphone charger to a tablet, the tablet will charge very slowly because there is not enough current to charge properly. If you try to charge your smartphone using a tablet charger, nothing bad will happen, and your smartphone will not explode or catch fire.

Most likely, the smartphone will not take the maximum possible number of amps that the charger provides, so everything will be fine. Maybe the smartphone will charge just a little faster.

Technology has long become an integral part of the everyday life of almost every person. Computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and so on. Young companies achieve success, and those that were pillars of past years disappear.

But among all, the “apple” company stands out - Apple. “Yabloko” has long been a sign of quality, and the products, although not cheap, are distinguished by the latest developments and elegant style.

The wide variety of gadgets has led owners to wonder whether they can use a standard smartphone. But first, a little information about the legendary company.

    A Brief History of Apple

You could write several rather lengthy treatises on the history of Apple and still miss something important.

The corporation was founded on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne. Apple has become one of the most famous manufacturers of software, laptops, tablets, phones, personal computers, audio players, etc.

The company's main center is located in Cupertino, California.

Apple's annual market capitalization has remained the highest in the world for several years. The company's founders created such practical and aesthetically attractive devices that a kind of consumer cult was built around Apple.

Until 2007, the company name included the word Computer. This was due to the fact that for the first thirty years Apple focused on the development of personal computers and suitable software. However, over time, Apple began to devote more time to more mobile devices: iPhones, iPads and iPods.

    What is an iPad?

One of Apple's most popular gadgets is the iPad.

A lightweight and convenient tablet provides uninterrupted access to the World Wide Web and successfully performs the basic functions of a personal computer.

Undoubtedly, it will not be able to completely replace a PC or laptop: the need for recharging and the small amount of memory will not allow it to work autonomously for days. Due to the specific operating system, it is not possible to install programs on the tablet that require specific software.

Among the main differences from conventional tablets are:

    • Excellent battery for longer battery life.
    • High sensitivity touch screen.
    • An operating system that responds quickly to requests.
    • Easy installation of programs.

But the gadget is not without its drawbacks:

    • A closed file system that does not allow developers to change it, similar to the Linux OS.
    • Lack of built-in USB ports.
    • Lack of a standard Flash player from Adobe.

How is an iPhone different from a smartphone?

If everything is clear with tablets, then how does the iPhone differ from thousands of other smartphones?

Owners of Apple smartphones note that the main advantage of the iPhone is its operating system. Unlike Android, whose updates are installed on phones of any brand, iOS is designed specifically for Apple. Thus, random “lags” of the system are practically excluded.

Applications downloaded through a special store are suitable for every smartphone. iOS is less susceptible to viruses than other operating systems. The elegant shape and body of the devices are not only beautiful, but also durable.

    A little about batteries

Before answering the question of whether it is possible to charge an iPhone using an iPad, you need to learn a little more about the properties of the battery in these devices. Since the days of the first telephones, the material from which batteries for smartphones and tablets are made has changed. Batteries have become lighter and more practical.

The Apple devices listed above use lithium-ion polymer batteries. Due to the fact that lithium is one of the lightest metals, the battery is lightweight but practical.

Their main difference from nickel batteries is the ability to charge the battery at any time. Also, gadget owners do not have to worry that incomplete charging can damage the battery and reduce its operating time.

To ensure proper operation of an iPhone or iPad, developers recommend fully charging the battery once a month and then completely discharging it. This will help keep the electrons moving.

Is it possible to charge an iPhone using an iPad charger?

Owners of Apple gadgets often lose the charger from their smartphone or tablet. After that, they try by all means to find out whether it is possible to charge an iPhone using an iPad charger, and vice versa.

Some people think that if it’s from an iPhone, it can ruin the battery. Some people sincerely believe that one gadget does not fit the parameters of others.

It's time to dispel the myths and find out the truth.

    Pros of the solution

Smartphone owners note that you can easily charge your iPhone using an iPad charger. Original accessories and devices fit together perfectly, and there are simply no connection problems.

The main advantage of this method of charging an iPhone from another Apple charger is the time savings. The charger that comes standard with your iPhone has a maximum output of one ampere. When charging from an iPad - two amperes. Thus, the time to fully charge the battery will be halved.

Also, if you use an iPad, you will no longer need to carry multiple chargers with you. This plus will be appreciated by those who need to constantly carry a smartphone, tablet and laptop with them. There are several cables in the bag that always get tangled.

However, is it possible to use an iPhone, since it is a more powerful device? Of course, it is possible, but it is worth noting that then the time to fully charge the battery will increase significantly.

Smartphone owners don't need to worry that a more powerful iPad charger will harm their iPhone. The maximum current indicated in the application does not play a big role, since smartphones have built-in controllers that do not allow more power to pass through than the gadget requires.

    Cons

But are there any disadvantages to this charging method? Users did not notice any significant deviations in the battery life of phones or tablets.

Most of all the information about how to charge an iPhone without damaging the battery's properties comes from the fact that almost all modern smartphones have batteries that do not last long. The owners are trying by all means to preserve them.

Thus, information has emerged that if you charge your phone using a tablet charger, then within a year the smartphone’s battery will become almost unusable. However, they forget to mention that, one way or another, most owners of Apple smartphones change batteries after a year.

Thus, there are no significant disadvantages from such charging.

    Information from official sources

Undoubtedly, only the manufacturer will provide the most complete information about whether an iPhone can be charged using an iPad charger.

The support service on the official website reported that iPads usually come with a charger with a USB interface. This same adapter is great for iPhone and iPod.

    Are other gadgets suitable?

Many owners of mobile devices at some point have a question: “Is it possible to charge an iPhone using an iPad, as well as from a computer via a cable?”

You can also charge gadgets from this company via USB connected to a computer or laptop. But first you need to figure out what ports were built into the PC. Modern personal computers are equipped with three types of USB ports: 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.

The maximum current strength in the first two types reaches five hundred milliamps or two and a half watts. The latest generation of ports output up to nine hundred milliamps or five watts. Charging time for iPhones and iPads will vary depending on battery size and port type.

First- and second-generation USB ports provide almost half the power, which means that charging time will be almost twice as long as when using third-generation ports.

It is very easy to distinguish the third generation port from the rest - it is blue.

It turns out that charging Apple gadgets is very simple. You can use both original accessories and a standard USB cable connected to a personal computer.
