Historical background

The grandeur of the stone walls and round towers have a magnetic effect on tourists. A visit to the Vila Vella fortress is associated with a journey into a fairy tale. Walking along the winding jagged parapets of the ancient walls, contemplating the azure surface of the sea, numerous boats and yachts entering and leaving the bay, the enchanting impression only intensifies. Having visited Vila Vella once, you understand that this is where the portal is located that connects two eras: past and present. You just need to find that one stone that will open the door to the Middle Ages.
The construction of the fortress took place in the 12th-14th centuries. And in the 16th and 17th centuries, residential areas grew around it, in which fishermen settled. Currently, the entire infrastructure of the city provides recreation for tourists.
The Governor's House (Casa de governator) is also one of the attractions of Tossa. It was built back in the Middle Ages, later reconstructed and remodeled. Today it also houses museum exhibits. There are many archaeological finds here - objects from the Romanesque period, marble statues of Mercury and Apollo, a collection of bronze objects and coins.
The City Museum is also an exhibition of paintings by Marc Chagall. The artist was captivated by this unique place, which remains the center of attraction for many famous talented people. He drew inspiration for creativity here. His paintings and sketches, including the famous work “The Heavenly Violinist,” are carefully preserved in one of the museum halls. On the wall nearby, the master wrote in his own hand: “Tossa is a blue paradise.”
The Church of St. Vincent and the chapel of Our Lady of Help, savior of drowning people, are impressive. On the facade of the temple there are carved statues of saints, among the shrines is the Black Madonna. Sacred to the Catalans, the Blessed Virgin, the performer of wishes, is a copy of a relic from Montserrat. The bell tower of the temple is decorated with a clock. How to get to Tossa de Mar
There are two cities near Tossa de Mar that receive international flights from Russia: Barcelona and Girona. There is no direct train connection between Tossa and these cities, so you need to get there either by taxi or public transport- by bus.
From Barcelona: buses depart from the bus station - Barcelona Nord Bus Station, almost every hour. The cost is 12 euros one way, the journey takes about 2 hours. If desired, you can also take a direct flight from Barça El Plat airport. There are slightly fewer flights, the schedule can be found at the office. carrier's website. The price is about 14 euros.
From Girona: Victory arrived here relatively recently, personal experience I don’t have a trip to Tossa from Girona. I can only say with confidence that transportation is carried out by the same company Sarfa; there is a schedule on their website.
We were traveling to Tossa from Barcelona, from the Nord bus station. We took a direct flight back to El Plat airport. Since it was Sunday evening, we got into some pretty serious traffic jams. Instead of 2 hours the ride took about 3.5. So you need to leave for the airport from Tossa de Mar, taking into account a possible delay of 1-2 hours.
Tossa de Mar: Beaches, fortress, city
I decided to write a few general words about the city for those who know little about it.
Tossa de Mar is a purely Spanish resort town. Very cozy and quiet. There are no clubs, bars or any other nightlife here. From early morning until sunset, people lie languidly on the beaches, of which there are three:
Gran Beach
The largest beach, which is located in the bay opposite the promenade. As a rule, there are always the most people here. A place for the laziest, walked a couple of hundred meters, stuck an umbrella and fell until the evening. At sunset this place looks very nice.
Beach Mar Menuda
If you are facing the sea on Gran, then this beach will be 3 minutes to the left. There are fewer people here, the sand is cleaner, you can swim into the rocks with a mask, look at the sea bass and sea urchins.

Codolar Beach (Platja Es Codolar)
It is located to the right of Gran, a 3-minute walk. The smallest and most cozy beach. Top view.
When we had free time, swam and sunbathed at Kodolar or Mar Menuda alternately. I don't recommend Gran.
In the evening, people fill the embankment, where there are very decent restaurants serving Spanish cuisine.
Before or after dinner, as a rule, people go up to the ancient fortress, which offers beautiful views of the city and the bay.
By 10 pm, satisfied and well-fed tourists disperse to their hotels and rooms, the city falls asleep.
Probably 99% of tourists spend every day in Tossa de Mar like this for a week or two. Depending on how long someone came here for. This town is simply created for such a lazy and relaxed holiday.
But, in my opinion, all the most interesting things in Tossa de Mar are located outside the city beaches and streets with restaurants. To see and appreciate the Costa Brava, we spent a couple of days on walking routes, which I highly recommend to everyone.
Hiking routes in Tossa de Mar
I don’t know why, but Google maps does not show any viewpoints or paths along the coast in the vicinity of Tossa. So I roughly drew the lines we walked along. There are no problems with this in Mapsme maps; all paths, no matter how wild they are, are displayed. To go on a hike you don’t need any special intelligence; we can roughly distinguish two routes: go left and go right, that’s all. But most sun-weary tourists are not aware of these places.
1st route
The first section of the path is very simple, both a pensioner and a child can handle it. The path is equipped with handrails. There are signs. but even if they were not there, there is only one road, along the coast. After several lookouts, a small number of people slowly fall off and return back, as the road begins to deteriorate and slowly turns into a path, in some places quite dangerous.
To see truly mesmerizing views you will have to climb through the wilds, up the mountain and down the mountain. But it's worth it.
Only after a few kilometers the trail descended us onto a rocky shore. If you wish, you can swim here in splendid isolation. At first glance, people climb here extremely rarely.
If you continue further along the coast, you can reach the Cala Lievado camping site and the beaches. According to the map, this route takes only about 2.5 km. But the map does not take into account the terrain and travel conditions. In some places the sections are quite difficult and dangerous. Sometimes the road diverges in several directions, sometimes some section is completely impassable and you have to go back and look for another path. If you don’t rush and be careful, then in principle there is nothing complicated.
In terms of time, such a hike will take about 5-6 hours, taking into account a leisurely exploration of all the places, swimming on the rock at the end. You should not be afraid of snakes or any other living creatures. There are simply none here; these are the characteristics of nature and climate.
2nd route
Now you need to go in the other direction, to the left, through the Mar Menuda beach and further along the coast.
Along this route you can find signs at all sections, people meet here more often and the road is extremely simple. Anyone can handle it.
The route is divided into two parts. The first section passes through the forest with subsequent access to the Av. Vila de blanes and to the observation deck. The top photo is just from her. Again, about half of the tourists, and even more, turn around here, since the trail joins the highway, it seems that this is the end of the route. You need to walk 200 - 300 meters along the road, then turn back into the forest, there will be a sign. The photo below is from the second part.
We ended the walk in the small bay of Cala Bona, here you can go down to a small beach and snorkel.
If you wanted, it seems like you could go further, but we didn’t succeed. It was too dangerous to climb the rock, and there was no desire to go around it. This walk takes about 2-3 hours. Another hour can be spent swimming in Cala Bona Bay.
Restaurants in Tossa de Mar
Spanish cuisine, in my opinion, is one of the best in terms of seafood. I simply could not help but mention this. On the promenade along Gran Beach there are many good restaurants where you can taste wonderful Sea Bass, Dorado or Lobster. We tried the cuisine in at least 7 restaurants. I want to highlight one of them from the others, this is Restaurant La Cuina de l’Avia. Marked on the map. Paella, mussels, shrimp, lobster, steak, sangria - everything was great. In the evening there is always a line here, you will have to either wait until a table becomes available or book in advance. I recommend it.
Holidays in Tossa de Mar
For those traveling to this Costa Brava resort town, I advise you to definitely walk along the coast. An unforgettable experience guaranteed for the rest of your life. It is best to do such outings in the morning, while the heat is not yet at its peak.
In terms of choosing housing, everything here depends only on specific financial capabilities; it is best to live on the first or second/third coastline. Although, the town itself is not big and even from the most remote hotels the walk to Gran is no more than 10-15 minutes.

How much does a holiday in Tossa de Mar cost? October 2018.
Tour cost
The tour was purchased through the early booking program at Pegas Touristik. The cost of the tour for four (two adults and two children - 12 years old and 3 years old), Tossa Beach 4* hotel, all inclusive for 8 days/7 nights amounted to 130 thousand rubles. This is flight + accommodation + insurance + group transfer, but excluding the cost of a Schengen visa.
Documents for visas were submitted later, for visas they paid 6 thousand per person, but children under 6 years old receive a Spanish Schengen visa for free, so the cost of visas for our company was 18 thousand. A nice bonus is that the Spaniards have opened up multiple visas for us, which are valid for two years.
There is a lot to see in Spain, the excursion program in this country is very interesting, but with children we mainly prefer a beach holiday. We only took a sightseeing tour of Barcelona, costing 30 euros per person. I liked the excursion; it turned out to be an easy, easy walk through one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
But we received a much greater impression from another excursion - visiting a football match with the participation of FC Barcelona and its living legend Leonel Messi at the famous Camp Nou stadium. This pleasure is not cheap, tickets cost 115 euros per person (we went alone with our eldest son), but the impressions we received, the crazy energy that Barca fans give, are definitely worth the money.
True, on the Camp Nou website you can buy tickets for Barça matches much cheaper, for 55 euros, but then the question will arise of how to get from Tossa to the stadium and back, in our case, from the Tossa bus station, the ticket holders for the match were picked up by a club bus FC Barcelona and brought them to the entrance to the stadium, after the match the same bus took everyone back to Tossa. Very convenient.
Food and products
Prices for food and wine in stores are quite reasonable. For example, the famous vacuum-packed jamon can even be bought for 1 euro. And we bought a five-liter canister of good Sangria for only 5 euros. Prices for wines vary, but for 5-8 euros you can buy quite decent wines. Although very cheap young wine in boxes, which can be purchased for literally a couple of euros, the quality is also very, very pleasing.

The temperature in early August in the Costa Brava is comfortable, but the sea was no longer very calm: when the flag is yellow, the waves literally knock you off your feet and don’t allow you to rise, so it’s worth keeping in mind that perhaps a couple of days will be lost from your beach holiday - for wind and bad weather.
What to take with you on vacation?
You shouldn’t go to Spain in general and Catalonia in particular without sunscreen! Of course, you can buy it locally, but all the information on the label will be in Catalan, plus the cost is higher than in Russia. I also advise you to take panthenol, because there is a chance of getting sunburned even just walking down the street.
If you are planning to go to Barcelona, bring clothes in which you can visit the temples (covered shoulders and knees), since the cost of scarves at the cathedral is 150 euros per piece.
Where is the best place to stay?
Tossa de Mar is dotted with hotels, even if you choose a hotel not on the first coastline, the walk to the sea is very short, a maximum of 10-15 minutes. If you have a hotel without meals, don’t worry, there are a lot of cafes where you can have an inexpensive snack of croissants or local sandwiches.
What to do at the resort?
Be sure to visit the fortified city of Villa Vella, located on the banks of Tossa, and the municipal museum in it: paintings by Chagall, Picasso, Dali are exhibited there, and the entrance costs only a few euros.
By going to the tourist center you can get a free map of local attractions; you can see them all in one day, even if you come here for the weekend from Barcelona.
On the shore you can buy a ticket for a boat trip to underwater caves lasting about an hour and a half - I highly recommend it, the feeling is indescribable.
In Tossa itself there are three beaches with small, small pebbles (for some reason they write everywhere that there is sand, but in Tossa itself there is none! Well, or it is very large and rocky!), there are no cabins, two toilets on the beach and then a little further away. If you use a boat that takes you on an excursion, you can get to the sandy beaches, drive for about 15 minutes, but you can only return until 18:00, then the boats don’t go and you’ll be stuck in the bay until the next morning.
I didn’t like that a lot of boats come to the main beach (there is a pier and a makeshift pier, but they also stop in other places).
For shopping, it is better to go to Barcelona or Girona; in Tossa, prices are above average and the choice is much smaller. Here I advise you to take only souvenirs, since there are many ceramic products (magnets, coasters, pictures, figurines, etc.).

The ubiquitous bocadillos cost from 4 euros, bravos potatoes - 3.5, meat with a side dish - 12 euros. The further from the beach, the cheaper. I didn’t eat anything super tasty, the portions were quite average, but you won’t leave hungry.
Entertainment
If we talk about the beach, then there is no entertainment there, only the sea excursion “Feel the Costa Bravo” (cost 17 euros per person), but if you have visited it once, you will not go again. The city has several nightclubs, a museum, a church, and the remains of an ancient fortress. If you want a more party place, it is better to choose neighboring Lloret de Mar.
