Is it worth installing Windows 10

Thank you for not forgetting to leave your comments and ratings!

Most recently, Microsoft released the new tenth version of Windows. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will be faster and more feature-rich, and also completely free, which is good news.

Many users have a question whether it is worth installing Windows 10 instead of Windows 7, or whether to keep the previous version of the operating system. Below we will talk in detail about the pros and cons of Windows 10, so that you can later decide whether the new operating system is right for you or not.

Appearance

  • Of course, at first glance, you can notice the beautiful, minimalistic appearance and user-friendliness of Windows 10. The Start menu is configured so that you can easily open a program or settings.

As a rule, after a month of using this version, you will completely get used to it and appreciate the beauty of Windows 10.

Desktop

  • Probably the most interesting new feature is the ability to create multiple desktops. For example, you will have the first desktop for games, the second for work, and the third for the Internet.

This function will also be useful for several people who use the same computer, but have different interests and activities, for example, the first desktop is for a gamer, and the second for a programmer.

New browser

  • To replace the slow Internet Explorer, a new browser called Edge. The new browser has a simple and user-friendly interface, and does not slow down like its ancestor.

Edge also has a feature that lets you take notes and draw on an open web page. You can then send such a note via email.

Voice assistant

  • Another useful innovation is the voice assistant. Cortana. Now, using your voice, you can launch programs, perform searches, and practically control your computer without your hands.

Unfortunately, Cortana is only available in English, Chinese and several other languages; Russian is not currently supported. If you know English or any other language available in Cortana, then you need to change some settings, since the program is not supported in the CIS.

Perhaps after some time Microsoft will update Cortana, which will be available for Russian-speaking citizens, we just have to wait.

Updates

  • Do not forget the fact that Microsoft, now and in the future, is throwing all its resources at improving Windows 10, reducing attention to previous versions.

Thus, owners should not rely on numerous updates that were previously released over and over again.
But it is also worth noting that Windows 10 still has many improvements to be made, which will be regularly installed and fill the computer’s memory. Therefore, some users decide not to download Windows 10, but to wait for it to be completely finalized.

Surveillance

  • After some time of using Windows 10, many users noticed that the operating system monitors and sends a large amount of private information, including wi-fi passwords, emails, names of downloaded programs and much more.

In the meantime, Microsoft says the information submitted will not be shared with third parties and is intended solely for your convenience.

In the question of whether it is worth installing windows 10 instead of windows 7, the answer is of course yes! Even taking into account the short life of Windows 10, we can already say that it is significantly superior to previous versions. By the way, any user of previous licensed versions can download Windows 10 completely free of charge.

In July 2015, a new operating system from Microsoft was released - Windows 10, which, according to the developers, absorbed the best of its predecessor systems and freed itself from the most annoying shortcomings.

“Ten” will be the last in the Windows OS family, so the general transition to it is a matter of time. But is it worth rushing to install Windows 10 now?

Seven reasons to install Windows 10 immediately

  • Windows 10 is faster than Windows 8 and 7.
  • Tens security mechanisms provide the highest level of security among all Windows operating systems.
  • Windows 10 has a single interface for desktops and mobile gadgets, which makes it possible to run the same applications on different devices. Data synchronization and access to cloud storage are provided by a Microsoft account.
  • The “Ten” has a full-fledged “Start” menu, which was so lacking for the “Eight” users.
    In addition, Start can be configured to work with a mouse and keyboard (Continuum mode, in which the menu occupies a corner of the screen) or touchscreen (full screen mode).
  • A lot of useful options have been added to Windows 10:
    virtual desktops, fast and well-secure Edge browser, free Office suite (available for download in the Windows Store), intelligent assistant Cortana (not yet available in the Russian version), improved Snap function (quickly switch between windows), new OneGet developer interface and etc.
  • There is no need to upgrade hardware. Windows 10 system requirements are the same as Windows 7 and 8.
  • Only within a year after the official release, a licensed copy of the “ten” can be obtained for free.

Five reasons to delay installation

  • “Ten” is still a very raw product, which means that the chance of encountering intractable problems is quite high.
  • Windows 10 does not support some programs and games that were launched in the “seven” and “eight”.
  • In the “ten” it is impossible to refuse system updates. If you pay for every megabyte downloaded, this will take a significant toll on your wallet.
  • Not all application and driver developers have optimized their products for Windows 10, which is why many users have encountered the problem of RAM leak.
    This is the name for a situation when a process gradually increases its memory consumption, trying to take over it completely.
  • Windows 10 collects and transmits a lot of personal information about the user to Microsoft servers - from website visits to voice patterns. This, according to reports from Windows forums, is the main reason for not upgrading to Windows 10.

Clean install or update?

Advice! If the arguments in favor of switching to Windows 10 turned out to be more convincing, decide which installation method suits you best: in update mode or “from scratch” - with or without formatting the disk.

Upgrade to Windows 10

pros

  • If Windows 7 or 8 (8.1) installed on a computer receives updates, nothing is required from the user other than consent to switch to “ten”.
    The “Get Windows 10” (GWX) utility, the icon of which hangs in the system tray, will offer to first reserve a copy of Windows 10, and when the turn comes, proceed to installation. All you have to do is agree and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • With this installation method, system settings, software and user files will be saved.
  • If the previous version of the OS was activated, Windows 10 will also be automatically activated. For owners of licensed systems, “ten” will not cost a penny.
  • If you don’t like the new OS, you can return the previous one within a month after the update.

Minuses

  • The update doesn't always go smoothly. A failure “halfway” can destroy both systems - the old and the new.
  • After the update, the old OS will remain on the hard drive, which will take up extra space.

Clean installation

pros

  • A clean installation has no connection to the previous system. It is advisable to resort to it if the old OS is so unstable that there is no confidence in the success of the update.
  • When updating, the version of Windows that was installed before will be installed (home will be updated to home, maximum will be updated to maximum, etc.). During a clean installation, you can select the OS edition yourself.
  • After a clean installation with formatting, there will be nothing left on the system disk.

Minuses

  • Loss of license. After installing from scratch, Windows 10 will require paid activation, even if the previous OS was licensed.
  • You will have to reinstall and configure the software.

Possible problems during update

The update, like a clean installation of Windows 10, lasts 30-40 minutes; upon completion, a welcome window will appear on the screen.

After logging in, you will see the same desktop with program shortcuts and slightly changed system icons. Everything will look almost the same as in the previous version of Windows, but...

  • Most likely, some programs will stop running;
  • You may find that some functions, such as network or sound, do not work;
  • Some network resources may be unavailable.

What to do?

Click on the application shortcuts. Those that do not start will have to be reinstalled by downloading the latest versions.

Some programs may be able to run in compatibility mode. To do this, open the shortcut's context menu and click "Fix compatibility issues."

If some of the equipment does not work, go to the manufacturers' websites and download the latest drivers.

Windows 10 can use most of the Windows 8 and 7 drivers, but with no guarantee of stability, especially if the device is old.

Unavailable network resources will have to be configured again. This is done in the same way as in the “seven” and “eight”.

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 10? There is no clear answer, nor is there a preponderance of opinions: enthusiastic, neutral and sharply negative reviews are approximately equally divided.

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 10

Windows 10: is it worth installing an updated OS?

Hello, dear readers! In today’s article I would like to review the latest innovation from Microsoft, or more precisely, we will talk about the Windows 10 operating system.

Today, many users are asking the question: Is it worth switching to Windows 10? What can we expect from this Windows 10 operating system? If you believe the management of Microsoft companies, Windows 10 is an improved system that includes quite a lot of useful applications and functions. I invite you to find out in today’s article whether it’s worth switching to Windows 10 or not.

So, many of you have already noticed that a new icon with an intriguing name has appeared in the lower right corner (for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1) - “Get Windows 10”. Some users have been following the new version since its announcement, while others only found out yesterday that Microsoft had released Windows 10.

The company offers owners of a licensed system to get the “top ten” for free - this is a tempting offer, but before switching to a new OS, it’s worth analyzing it and finding out the advantages and disadvantages of the transition.

After reading this material, you will learn the following points:

system requirements for Windows 10;

new applications and benefits;

shortcomings and losses;

methods of obtaining;

final analysis.

Let's learn about system requirements for Windows 10

If your computer meets the parameters for Windows 8.1, then the tenth version will work correctly - this information is provided by the developers on the official page. But to be sure whether Windows 10 will work or not, you can familiarize yourself with the more detailed requirements:

16 GB of free hard disk space;

Video card: device with WDDM driver supporting DirectX 9;

Display with a resolution of 1024×600;

2 GB RAM for 64-bit, 1 GB for 32-bit;

Processor: at least 1 GHz.

Another mandatory item is having a Microsoft account. If the computer parameters are lower, this does not mean that the new system will not work, but you cannot expect smooth and fast operation from it.

By the way, if you decide to update, I can offer you clear instructions that I prepared for you the other day:

In general, these figures given above may be incomprehensible to some users - Microsoft has taken care of this too. In addition to the description, in the “Get Windows 10” application there is also a built-in assistant whose task is to test the computer for compatibility for the new system. Also, after analysis, it will report problematic programs and devices that may not work correctly or not start at all on Windows 10.

I suggest you consider a number of advantages and new opportunities.

The new operating system is already available, so you can find out its advantages and disadvantages. Looking ahead, we can safely say that Windows 10 has met all expectations. The “ten” has many more advantages. I would say there are practically no downsides, but there are losses - applications and some useful functions that remained in Windows 7/8. But let's talk about everything in order. Below are 7 reasons why you should upgrade to version ten.

Reason 1 and 2: security and new browser

Finally, Internet Explorer ended its existence, and with it the opinion that Microsoft was incapable of releasing a quality browser. Microsoft Edge has destroyed these stereotypes, with its high speed and useful features. And Edge has every chance to become one of the most popular browsers, because the current leader Google Chrome is starting to bore users because of its gluttony.

As for security, the manufacturer claims that the “ten” is the most secure system. Microsoft is giving users the opportunity to create a personal Fort Knox that will work alongside Windows Hello, Defender and SmartScreen. Protection will be provided through updates, which users do not like so much. But it is worth noting that they can be disabled in Windows 10 as well.

Reason 3 and 4: good interface and Multi-Doing

Windows 10 received the best interface features from versions 7 and 8:

presence of a “start” button;

"Live Tile" from Windows 8;

successful minimalism;

Convenient work with personalization.

Judging by the interface, the developers realized their main mistakes and made the interface simpler and more welcoming for users, regardless of their knowledge.

Working with windows, shortcuts, folders and desktops has become much more convenient thanks to Multi-Doing. This affected applications such as Snap Assist, Action Center and Task View. According to Microsoft, these innovations are one of the main reasons for the transition. In fact, their importance is overestimated.

Reason 5 and 6: Unified System and Windows Store

From a smartphone to an Xbox game console, everything will work on Windows 10. The company made attempts to connect devices with each other, but it was only possible to implement the idea on the “ten”. If your collection contains devices running on the Windows platform, then it’s definitely worth switching. Full synchronization will be available when the operating system is optimized for devices other than the computer.

The Windows Store has the same advantages - here you can purchase and download content for any device that is linked to a Microsoft account. For example, on your computer you can find and purchase the necessary applications for your smartphone. The design of the store has changed for the better and is now easier to use.

The most important reason for gamers: DirectX 12

The new generation of software will soon be publicly available. But at the latest presentations, Microsoft representatives said that DirectX 12 will be available only for Windows 10. Therefore, if games are not in last place, then switching to “top ten” is definitely worth it.

DirectX 12 will be available for both personal computers and the Xbox game console. It is not yet known when games running on the new generation platform will appear. But gamers will sooner or later have to say goodbye to Windows 7 or 8, and it’s better to do it now while you can get the tenth version for free.

Useful features that were not included in Windows 10

Microsoft has already announced that owners of external USB drives will have to download drivers themselves, without which the devices will not work in Windows 10. Also, Tens users will lose a number of applications and functions that are useful for some.

Desktop widgets and classic games in the new Winows 10

Many users fell in love with desktop widgets from Windows 7 - weather, calculator, clock, CPU load, etc. If you wish, you can buy or download third-party widgets for free.

Microsoft decided that widgets are not needed for the new version. In addition, the classic Hearts, Klondike and Minesweeper will disappear from Windows 10. To replace it, Microsoft is offering free downloads of new versions of Microsoft Minesweeper and Microsoft Solitaire.

Disabling updates

If a user receives a home version of Windows 10, he will not be able to disable automatic updates - this feature is only available to owners of the Enterprise and Professional versions. Of course, sooner or later there will be a way to turn off updates, which sometimes interfere with your work and appear at inopportune moments.

Media Center and DVD support

Windows Media Center was not the most popular service in previous generations of the system, so they decided to remove it. Now there are more convenient and faster programs for viewing videos and photos.

The company believes that the DVD industry is already a thing of the past, so the “ten” does not have standard software for playing DVDs with video. And if a laptop or PC is used to watch movies, then it is worth getting an application from third-party developers.

Useful information about the update

The transition can be made using the “Get Windows 10” application or a downloadable utility that is available on the company’s official website.

If the “Get Windows 10” icon does not appear in the lower right corner (near the clock), then you should check whether automatic updates and Internet connection are enabled.

There are also some features that are useful to know before starting the update:

1. You can update only within 12 months after the final release of the tenth version;

2. When upgrading to Windows 10 from the seventh or eighth OS, the user will receive all updates in full.

3. Owners of computers with Vista or XP will also be able to switch to the new operating system if the computer's characteristics allow it, but they will need a full installation, not an update.

However, I think you may still have doubts about the question: Is it worth switching to Windows 10?

You may ask me: Are there times when you don't need to upgrade to Windows 10?

I answer you: Yes, there are such moments. Let's put it this way, when the hardware is too outdated to work with a new operating system - this applies not only to the processor or RAM, but also to the monitor. An interactive assistant will help you find out about incompatibility, which will appear after launching “Get Windows 10” in the lower right corner.

Another additional reason not to upgrade to Windows 10 is your lack of skills when working with the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 interface itself. Because if you are an ordinary novice user who is still on versions of Windows XP or Windows 7, then you will need some time to understand the principle of operation of both the operating system itself as a whole and its individual applications, a prime example is the Metro application Windows 8.

In this case, I would advise you to first install the Windows 8 operating system on a virtual machine in order to practice and gain experience on it, and then if you decide to upgrade to Windows 10, do it confidently and fearlessly. I even wrote a separate article, read it:

Concluding today’s article, it’s time to sum it up – Is it worth switching to Windows 10?

As you have already noticed, there are a lot of advantages, there are practically no disadvantages, only the loss of some applications that were popular among a small circle of users. Below are the main advantages, thanks to which we can say that the updated version of Windows 10 contains a number of advantages compared to previous versions of operating systems.

1. convenient and stylish interface;

2 . synchronization between devices;

3. friendly interactive assistant;

4. new and optimized Edge browser.

5. DirectX 12;

What you need to know before installing Windows 10

If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8 installed, then the configuration of your computer is also suitable for Windows 10. The system requirements are more than affordable:

  • Processor with a frequency of at least 1 GHz.
  • 1 GB of RAM for a 32-bit system, 2 GB for a 64-bit system.
  • 16 GB for a 32-bit system, 20 GB for a 64-bit system.
  • A monitor with a resolution of at least 800x600 pixels (can you find one these days?).
  • Video card supporting DirectX 9.

Back up your valuable files!

You never know what will happen. Save photos, videos, documents to a flash drive or external hard drive. If you have fast Internet, you can upload important files to They will become accessible not only from your computer, but also anywhere there is Internet (you just need to know your login and password).

Questions and answers

Installing and activating Windows 10

1. Where to download Windows 10?

Answer: if you do not want to update via the Update Center (for example, for a clean installation or there is no operating system on your PC), use

2. Is it possible to activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7/8 key?

Answer: directly - no. If you try to install Windows 10 “cleanly”, formatting the hard drive, the key will not work. You must first install Windows, for which you have a key, then install Windows 10 on top.

3. I heard that Windows 10 needs to be installed only from a disk/flash drive. Is it so?

Answer: No. If you have a licensed Windows 7 or 8 installed, this is simple and will avoid activation problems.

Answer: The old key won't work anyway. Don’t worry: when you connect to the Internet, Windows 10 will check your computer in the Microsoft database - if ten has already been activated on this computer, it will be successfully activated again (see Start - Settings - Update and Security - Activation).

5. I had licensed Windows on my laptop, but I removed it and installed the Windows Pro Ultimate Edition build. If I install it on top of Windows 10, will it become licensed?

Answer: No! Install the original Windows of the previous version, activate it (the key can be hardcoded into the BIOS, but most often you will have to activate it with the key from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop) and then install “ten” through Windows Update.

Advice: On the hard drives of most laptops there is a recovery partition with a backup copy of the Windows that was installed when purchased. Unfortunately, if you cleanly install Windows with inept hands, this partition is damaged and you won’t be able to start the recovery, but still read the instructions for your laptop and try it, maybe you can get Windows back without any extra hassle.

6. I have more than one Windows 7/8 license key. Can I install them one by one on my PC, upgrade to Windows 10 and thus get more than one Windows 10 license?

Answer: I haven’t personally tested it, but judging by the reviews, it won’t work. Activation of ten is tied to the computer hardware. It is enough to activate the “top ten” on your computer once, all subsequent installations of Windows 10 will be linked to the first key. Microsoft technical support may be able to help you transfer your license to another PC, but there are no guarantees.

7. You say that activation is tied to hardware. And if I replace the video card/motherboard/anything else, what will happen to the activation?

Answer: I haven't checked it yet. I assume that if there are significant changes to the configuration, you will need to reactivate it or contact technical support.

8. Can I get a Windows 10 license for free?

Answer: In general, you can by joining the Windows Insider program (more on that later), but you will have to pay by becoming a tester of the latest updates. So if you want stability, pay for a license; no, use Windows 10 for free, but each update that comes may (but is not obliged to) cause problems with the system.

9. I set it to “ten”, there is no disk space left! What to do?

Answer: first of all, standard "Disk Cleanup" not going anywhere. Everyone forgets about this instrument, but sometimes they can free up more space than the famous ones Start- type the word Cleaning- run this program - select the drive C: - OK- wait - button Clean system files- wait - check all the boxes (or only the ones you need) - OK.

Secondly, a new disk cleaning tool has appeared in the top ten. Start - Settings - System - Storage - Drive C: - Temporary files - there will be a backup copy of your previous Windows (in case you decide to go back, it’s been there for a month) and other files that you can get rid of if you wish.

10. What version will my Windows 7 Home Premium/Professional etc. be updated to?

Answer: see below:

From releaseFor release
Windows 7 StarterWindows 10 Home
Windows 7 Home Basic
Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows 7 ProfessionalWindows 10 Pro
Windows 7 Ultimate
From releaseFor release
Windows Phone 8.1Windows 10 Mobile
Windows 8.1Windows 10 Home
Windows 8.1 ProfessionalWindows 10 Pro
Windows 8.1 Professional for Students

For most home users, there is absolutely no difference between Windows 10 and Windows 10 Professional.

Working with Windows 10

1. How is she, fast?

Answer: subjective - Windows 7 loads faster. Compared to Windows 8 .1 There is no difference in performance, in my opinion. Except that applications installed from the Store launch faster.

2. More stable?

Answer: if anyone remembers the release of Windows XP (without SP1, SP2...), then Windows 10 is now at the same level. That is, everything works just fine. Among the most common problems: explorer.exe crashes (the Desktop and windows of open folders are closed), shortcuts to installed programs are not created in the Start menu. So far, few people have reported critical errors due to which Windows 10 would not boot (there are not many reports for the query “Windows 10 will not start”). There are problems with games that use anti-piracy and anti-cheat systems, but this is not a problem with Windows, but with the developers of such creations; everything will be corrected in the future and will not go away. So if you can't run an online game, look at its system requirements - if it doesn't have Windows 10, then it doesn't have to run on it. Wait for updates and patches.

3. What is the new Start menu?

Answer: The menu is just a menu, nothing special. Live tiles are no longer full screen (this is configurable), so they can be used. For example, it is convenient to view the weather forecast in the Start menu. The search has been moved to a separate button and I think this is correct. The only thing missing is the Cortana assistant in Russian.

4. What else is new in Windows 10?

Answer: in fact, a lot of things have been added to this OS, you just have to take a closer look. For example:

  • Several desktops. Yes, yes, finally creating multiple desktops is supported at the system level.
  • Recording games. Yes, yes, Windows 10 will please beginner Let's Play players. Press Win+G and try. There are very few fine adjustments, but you can use it.
  • Notification Center. Unfortunately, it’s a very buggy thing, but the idea is not bad - to collect all program notifications in one place.
  • Tablet mode. When turned on, each window opens full screen automatically. Tablet users will appreciate it.
  • Convenient volume control. Finally!
  • Expanded driver database. For all the PCs on which I installed Windows 10, there were standard drivers for all devices. Everything is working. Even the standard AMD video card driver ensured a comfortable game in the third Witcher. If I installed Windows 7/8, the game would not run so quickly with the standard driver. This does not mean that there is no need to install third-party drivers, but at least there will be fewer complaints from beginners: “I reinstalled Windows, the games are now slow!”
  • And other.

Of course, the changes also affected the Windows kernel. This means that most likely various anti-cheat systems for games and drivers for older devices will not work. This is normal when a new OS is released.

Three installation methods

Windows 10 can be installed in three ways:

1. Upgrade to Windows 10 via Update. The easiest installation option if you already have Windows 7 or 8.1 installed. On the first day of release, dozens were updated in this way 14 million PCs!

2. Installation over updating from disk/flash drive. Again, no different from installing previous OSes.

Pros: There is no need to reinstall anything, except perhaps the drivers for the video and sound cards. Other drivers are optional.

Minuses: if you somehow messed up your Windows settings (played with system optimizers), then most likely the glitches will remain. Windows Vista cannot directly update to Windows 10. You will have to install the update on top one by one from a disk/flash drive: Windows Vista -> Windows 7 -> Windows 8.1 -> Windows 10.

3. Installation from scratch. It’s no different from installing Windows 7 () or Windows 8 (), except that creating bootable disks and flash drives is now easier than ever.

Pros: a clean system is installed. Everything will work as quickly as possible, because the system is not littered with third-party software.

Minuses: you will have to re-install programs, games, configure.

Updating to Windows 10 via Update

As I already said, the easiest way. Make sure that

  • you have a licensed Windows 7 or 8,
  • all important files are copied to a safe place,
  • you have at least 16 GB free on drive C (more is better, it all depends on the specific PC),
  • all system updates are installed (more on this below).

Come in Start - Control Panel - Windows Update. If you reserved a Windows 10 installation, this will appear:

This is not happy because you have to wait. Ideally it should be like this:

The same offer to install Windows 10

Then just click “Get Started”, wait for the download (if it has not downloaded yet), agree to the license agreement and wait. It takes half an hour or longer to install, depending on the performance of the computer. E If you have not installed Windows updates, then Windows 10 is still far away. You need to install all updates:

Windows Update prompts you to install updates

Place (button "Install updates"), restart your computer, go to again, press "Search for updates" and install the updates again. If you had Windows 8, then the Windows 8.1 update will be installed first (almost a gigabyte), then about 1.1 GB of Windows 8.1 updates will be installed. If you have slow Internet, the installation may take a day. Then another 2.6 GB of Windows 10 will start loading...

Fixing the missing offer to install Windows 10 in Update Center

Possible problems due to which the offer to install “top ten” will not appear

1. Important updates were not installed. Look at the update log (the button on the left in the Center), if some updates have a “Failure” status, double-click on this line, look at the error information and google the error code - there will probably be a solution.

2. You have not reserved the update (optional step):

3. Installation of updates is not configured correctly. Click "Settings" and make these settings:

Search for updates again.

Command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow"

If the above doesn't help, open the Start menu and type " cmd" without quotes. The item will appear "Command line". Click on it with the left mouse button - a black command line window will open. Type the command in it "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" and press Enter.

This command forces the update mechanism to run. Once launched, the window can be closed. Wait a minute and open it again. The Windows 10 loading indicator should appear, after which there will be the offer we need to upgrade to Windows 10.

Team "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" You can also enter it in the “Run” window (keyboard shortcut Win+R).

If the Windows reservation icon still doesn't appear

You can install Windows update using MediaCreationTool. For more information, see below (Installing Windows 10 from a disk or flash drive on top of an existing one). I do not recommend this method because it is currently unclear whether the license will transfer to the new Windows. I can’t check it because... The license is already linked to my PC.

If you receive errors when installing an update to Windows 10

When you try to install Windows 10 through Update, you may receive errors 80240020 and 80070057:

How to fix:

1. Delete everything in the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.

2. Run the command again "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".

1. After installing Windows 10, update your drivers. I described how to search for drivers in the chapter on instructions for installing the previous version of Windows - Windows 8. The "ten" differs for the better in that the vast majority of drivers are installed out of the box, so you only need to install the driver on the most important hardware - the video card. Without a driver from the manufacturer, you will not get maximum smoothness in games.

2. Start Windows 10 activation: Start - Settings - Update and Security - Activation - button "Activate". Then in the future you will be able to format your hard drive at least a hundred times and set the “ten” completely - it will be activated without a key.

MediaCreationTool guides you through each installation step with clear questions.

Installing Windows 10 from a disk or flash drive “cleanly”

I won’t repeat myself - installing Windows 10 in this regard is no different from that. The only difference is in simplifying the creation of a boot disk (see below).

How to create a bootable disk or USB flash drive with Windows 10 for a clean installation or upgrade on top

It couldn’t be simpler - you need to use MediaCreationTool, which will do everything for you, as long as you have the Internet and a blank disk in the drive. A flash drive with a capacity of 4 GB or larger will also work.

Yes, yes, Microsoft has finally made a program that can both update Windows and create bootable disks. It's just some kind of holiday!

You need to download depending on the bitness of your Windows. The 32-bit version will not run on 64-bit Windows and vice versa.

If you need to know how to boot from such a disk, you can read my old article. Nowadays, computers are ruled not by BIOS, but by UEFI, but in general everything remains the same.

Why (not) you need to install Windows 10

The arguments for and against installing Windows 10 are the same, only the point of view is different:

1. Windows 10 will be the last major version of Windows. New features will come with new updates. Most likely, this was originally supposed to be done with Windows 8, but it didn’t work out - users did not accept this OS, and besides, the importance of timely updates is still not clear to many. Therefore, the developers acted harshly - in the home version of Windows 10 (without the Pro add-on), system updates cannot be disabled using standard means.

Behind: Now the system will be protected by the latest patches that eliminate vulnerabilities.

Against: updates can “break” the operating system, the computer simply will not turn on, for novice users this is a disaster. 2.

New look, new features. The developers and designers had a difficult task: to make the operating system different from Windows 8.1 so much as to seem really new, but at the same time not cause the impression of foreignness.

Behind: new features are useful. The Start menu has been improved and is more convenient. There is now game recording, support for multiple virtual desktops, convenient work with windows, and more. Performance is subjectively faster than Windows 7 (no difference compared to 8.1).

Against: outwardly neither fish nor meat. Many people find the Start menu terrible. Under the hood is the same V8 with a new skin. New features that dramatically change the look of Windows can be confusing for people who are not comfortable using computers.

The question arises: should we switch to it or stay on the old 7/8? I’ll answer this: it’s really a new version of Windows. You can, of course, use an old phone, wear old jeans, eat month-old food... This is everyone's personal choice. I Not I adhere to the thoughtless principle “everything new is good,” but in this case I recommend trying a new operating system.

I already have Windows 10! And you?

Microsoft has made sure that the question of how to install Windows 10 causes as little difficulty as possible among users. Moreover, the developers even made this process absolutely free, even for those who do not have a key. On this page we will introduce you to all installation methods, and also tell you where to get the distribution.

All methods can be divided into two large groups - installation from scratch or migration from the previous generation of the operating system. There are 3 approaches for these operations:

  • Through the Update Center;
  • Using the command line;
  • Or using special tools;

First of all, you need to choose a path. The first two are available if you are currently running Windows 7 or 8 of any generation. In this case, if you have not disabled regular and scheduled updates, you have probably already seen a similar picture:

Until the updates are installed, you will not see this message. Next, you need to click on the message that the system has loaded the new OS and is ready for installation. And you will find yourself in a window like this:

After clicking on the “Continue” button, you will find yourself in the update center, where you only have to click one “Get Started” button.

After this, the PC will update itself. Moreover, all processes occur automatically and in the background. You don't need to do anything extra. When 10 is installed, the computer will prompt you to reboot, which can be done not immediately, but delayed a little. The next time you boot you will have a new OS. If you don't like it, you can roll back to your previous version. If everything is fine, then it is advisable to delete the Windows.old folder, because it takes up a lot of space.

Installing 10 via the command line

This method is also for those who are already running one of the latest versions of the OS. It happens that the method described above is not suitable. The first thing you should definitely do is turn on “Automatic Updates”. Without this step, everything described below will not help you solve the problem. Moreover, the settings should look like this:

Check, if everything is so, then use the WIN + R key combination to call up the executive environment and enter cmd, and then the command - wuauclt.exe / updatenow + press Enter.

After this, the download will begin. You can check this in the update center, where you will see the beginning of this process.

As in the first case, here the download will also be in the background, you just need to wait for it to complete and then follow the instructions on the screen, reboot and get the updated OS.

2 options above are only for those who already have another OS installed. If you bought a new device or want to upgrade to 10 from scratch, then you need instructions on how to install Windows 10 for free from scratch. The easiest option is to buy installation media. It is sold on a flash drive, but is quite expensive, so you can make it yourself, which will save you several thousand rubles. To do this you will need:

  • Another computer that is already working;
  • Utility ;

We launch the software on the computer, and in the first window select “Create installation media for another computer.”

You can either immediately create media or download an ISO image of the system and mount it later in any way convenient for you.

A USB device is the simplest method that does not require additional actions later. Therefore, let's dwell on it. Please note that the media itself must already be in the slot on your PC. The capacity of the flash drive is at least 4 GB. You can select the flash drive itself at the next stage, if you suddenly have several connected.

After this, you can forget about this utility for a while and go about your business. Again, it will download the necessary files in the background and mount the image itself. The time for this process depends on the speed of your Internet as well as the speed of your computer.

As a rule, this will take from 20 to 90 minutes. The process of creating an installation flash drive is shown in more detail in the video:

Installation process from scratch

Everything described above was preparation. Next, the installation itself begins. Before doing this, make sure that there is no information you need left on your hard drive. Windows 10 definitely requires formatted media. If the information is there, but you don’t need it, then it’s okay, during the installation process you can format the drive and continue the process as if it were empty.

The first step is to change the boot order of your devices. To do this, go to the BIOS section BOOT. You can get into the Bios when you restart your computer by pressing the DEL or F2 button. You must connect the USB flash drive and assign it to boot first. Save changes and reboot. In this case, the PC will start working with the installer, and you will see the following window:

If at the time of creating the bootable media you selected the Russian language and the Single Language option, then at this stage you will no longer be able to change the settings. We click on the next button and find ourselves on a new screen where there is only one button - “INSTALL”. Below there is a separate item -, but it is not interesting to us. Click on installation.

At this stage, the OS will already ask you for the key. For some, it will be automatically detected, since it is built into the BIOS. If it is not defined, then enter it manually. For those who do not have a key, you can click on the “Skip” button and return to the activation issue later.

A “License Agreement” will appear in front of you. Read it, check the box next to the phrase that you accept the rules and click the “Next” button.

The last steps separate you from starting the installation. On the newly opened window you need to select the “Custom” item.

In this case, you can choose the hard drive on which the OS will be installed. If the disk stores information, it will have to be formatted. All this can be done within one window, it is shown below.

For those who have several partitions, let us clarify that the OS requires at least 50 GB. Even taking into account that it itself only takes up 4 GB on a flash drive, after unpacking it will require more space, including for normal operation. And you should not touch, delete, merge or carry out any other actions with other partitions, especially small ones - 100-500 MB. They are technical and are required for the correct operation of the entire PC.

After these steps, Windows 10 will begin to install. This will take time, but the process can be monitored by a progressive number of percentages.

When it's all over, a series of questions awaits you. The first question will be about the license. You can skip it again. Those who have already entered the code for this question will no longer see it.

In the next step, you can configure the operating parameters. Even if you don't want to deal with them, we recommend not using the standard ones. The OS collects important information that does not need to be shared. All this can be disabled at this stage.

Then proceed to create an account. Determine who owns the PC - you or the system administrator. The latter is found only in organizations, which is why the answer “I” is the most common.
