What does wrong file type mean. Open files of unknown formats. A set of special programs

Everyone knows what PDF and DOC are. But does everyone know the CR2 formats or, for example, BSB? CHIP will show you how to recognize and open any file.

What to open You received an important letter, but the attached file does not open: none of the programs installed on the computer can cope with it. There will be a long and possibly unsuccessful search for an application designed to display such documents. But CHIP comes to the rescue: our tips and utilities included on the DVD are guaranteed to help you open any file.

Riddle: what is it?

A typical situation: a friend sent you a file, but, unfortunately, forgot to tell you which program is capable of opening it. First of all, stop playing hide-and-seek with Windows: under certain configurations, the operating system doesn't even display the file extension, which makes analysis even more difficult. Open Explorer (in the "seven" for this you need to activate the top menu by pressing the "Alt" key) and select "Tools | Folder Options (Folder Options) | View". Clear the check box in front of the "Hide extensions for known file types" option. Now go back to the unknown document - you should be able to see its extension in File Explorer. If a file has two extensions at once (for example, picture.jpg.exe), delete it immediately: this is how dangerous viruses disguise themselves.

Enter an unfamiliar file extension on www.open-file.ru to find out what program can open it. If the file format is unfamiliar to you, go to the web page www.open-file.ru. Enter the desired extension in the search bar and click on "Find". You will receive information about which program can open this file. However, this service does not indicate the specific version of the required application, and this information is sometimes fundamentally important: it may well happen that, for example, when opening a DOC file in Office 2003, formatting and other information will be lost. In the most difficult cases, you will be able to open documents in programs only of those versions in which they were created. To avoid problems with Word document, in Explorer, right-click on it and select "Properties". On the "Details" tab, you will find exact information about the version of the program in which the file was saved. There you can also find out other interesting information - for example, the author, date last change and the templates used in the creation.

Destruction of borders: open any file

Now you have enough information about the file, but you still can't open it because you either don't have the right program or its corresponding version. Depending on the extension, one of four types of applications that are on our DVD will help you: viewers are used to view images, analyzers provide additional information about the file, universal programs display any document, and converters even allow you to edit these files.

Viewers.

For files created with Office suite, Microsoft offers various viewers. For example, the Excel Viewer utility allows you to open tables with the XLS extension, even if you do not have the appropriate spreadsheet.

Free program Universal Viewer can open documents, images, videos, database records and more Other files you can view with with the help of Universal Viewer (available for download at www.uvviewsoft.com).

This program recognizes over 130 file types, including all common image formats, as well as PDF and video. After launching the utility, activate the "Navigation" panel in the top menu "View | Interface | Show navigation bar. Then find your problematic file and click on it in the preview area. If Universal Viewer is familiar with this extension, the document or image will be displayed on the right. If it's about system files, shortcuts, or something like that, you will see the hex code of the file. Experienced users can thus examine the title for links and check if the document is a Trojan.

FileAlyzer, in addition to basic information, displays security settings, hex files and ADS streams Analyzers.

If the Universal Viewer is unable to display the file, you may be dealing with a container format. This group includes archive files used by packers, such as ZIP or ARC, as well as video formats (MKV).

If you have FileAlyzer installed, right-click on an unknown document and select "Analyze file with FileAlyzer" from the context menu.

As a result, you will get a variety of information about the file, and in some cases this utility also offers a preview function.

If this information does not help you, use the Openwith program, which is available for download at www.openwith.org. Here you can also conduct an analysis online. After entering the extension (or clicking on an unknown file), you will be provided with a link to a free program that will be able to open the desired document.

Station wagons. Most often, problems arise with the opening of multimedia formats and are associated with the existence of many different codecs. If you do not want to waste time looking for what you need, just use universal programs - for example, VLC media player(available on our DVD). This player is not demanding on computer resources and supports all conceivable audio and video formats.

In case of graphic files almost the same universal tool is the free program IrfanView. This compact image viewer handles almost all formats - displays and converts them. On our DVD and www.irfanview.com you will find a huge number of plug-ins for it. After installing IrfanView, you will be able to convert even rare formats such as PCX, LDF and ECW to common JPEGs and PNGs.

Java utilities work in a similar way. They blur the boundaries between different operating systems and platforms. Often it doesn't even matter if the program works on cell phones, computers, or game consoles. Java even runs packages from the Linux and Apple worlds on Windows machines. The only condition is that the Java Runtime Environment must be installed on the computer (you can download it for free from www.java.com).

Then you can, also for free, take advantage of a huge number of different programs platform-independent files that can often help tailor files for cell phones or smartphones and convert to desired format.

Free FLV Converter converts YouTube Flash Video clips to more common video formats Converters.
If the file still doesn't open, just convert it. Free free program FLV Converter is able to convert downloaded from YouTube video with the FLV extension to a common and more convenient format - for example, AVI. This will play the movie in popular programs, including Windows Media player.

In the case of video formats, the free Super 2010 utility, which can be downloaded from www.erightsoft.com, will be a good helper. It effectively converts almost all video and audio files, and also allows you to quickly export movies to devices such as iPhone, Nintendo DS or PlayStation 3 with the required encoding options and the desired extension.

Today there are converters for almost any format. If you could not immediately find a suitable program, enter into Google, for example, the request "convert jpg eps" (of course, replacing the extensions with the ones you need). In our case, the search engine returned an Australian site called jpeg2eps (rses.anu.edu.au) as a result, offering instant conversion of such files.

Distrustful users do not even need to install the utility on their computer to convert files. This can be done on sites such as www.media-convert.com. It is enough to upload a document and determine what format it needs to be converted to.

Leave your address Email so that the service can send you the converted file. This service is completely free - you just have to put up with watching ads. The service is intended primarily for small documents that need to be converted quickly. In the case of heavy files, such as movies, it is still better to use the program installed on the computer. Also, do not trust the online converter with important documents, such as business correspondence, because no one knows who else will see this information.

Associating files with the right applications

You can manually reassign the association of any file type in Windows 7 in the context menu of Explorer. double click document does not always open desired application. If files are incorrectly assigned to programs in Windows, it may happen that mail client Thunderbird will start playing the Flash movie and Word will display the image file. In the XP version, this connection is regulated in the menu “Tools | Folder Options | File Types. In Vista, you will have to right-click on the desired file in Explorer, select Properties | General | Edit" and specify the required application in the dialog box. The file is now attached to this program. Be careful: if you cancel this link without creating a new one, the file will not open.

ExtMan displays file mappings and lets you edit them. Additional help is provided by the free ExtMan utility (on DVD). This little assistant manages file associations so you don't have to go deep into operating system settings.

The program works even without installation. An additional benefit of ExtMan is that you can see all relationships at a glance and can quickly redistribute or remove matches.

After starting, find the desired extension in the list and click on "Delete extention" - the connection will be deleted. If you want to reconnect, go to "Edit extention | open | Edit" and find the path to the corresponding program. Finally, click on "Save" - your new connection ready.

As a rule, editing a file extension should reflect a change in the format of the record of the information contained in it. And such interference in the file structure is most often carried out using specialized applications that change the extension. But the cases when the user has to fix the extension on their own are still not so rare.

Instruction

  • The easiest way to change the file extension is to use a program specifically designed for working with files. You can open it in Windows in many ways - for example, right-click the "Start" button and select the line "open explorer" in the pop-up list of commands.
  • In the left column of the file manager interface, select the drive on which the rename object is located, and then, sequentially expanding the folders in the same left column, go to the directory containing the file.
  • If the extension of the desired object is not displayed in the file manager, then open the "Organize" drop-down list above the left column of Explorer and select the "Folder and search options" line. If your version of the OS does not have this list, then open the “Tools” section in the menu and select the “Folder Options” item. In both cases, the same window will open in which you need a list of options on the "View" tab - find the line "Hide extensions for known file types" in it. Uncheck the checkbox for this line and click OK.
  • By right-clicking the desired file, select the "rename" command, go to the end of the name (press the End button) and correct the extension. By pressing the Enter key you will fix the changed file name.
  • The same operation can be done on the command line, even if the display of the file extension is disabled in Windows settings. Calling the Simulator Window command line implemented through the program launcher dialog - press simultaneously Win keys and R to open this dialog. Then type cmd, press Enter and a command line terminal will open.
  • Use the rename command or its abbreviation ren to rename. This command requires the full path and name of the object being edited, as well as the name of the file with a new extension (the second parameter does not require the full path). For example, if a file called someFile.doc is placed in the text folder in the root directory of disk F, then to change its extension from doc to txt, enter the following command: ren F: extsomeFile.doc someFile.txt and press the Enter key.
  • (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push(()); In OpenCart 2x, they introduced the installation of modules through the admin panel.
In the Russian assembly, this is called "Installing extensions".

Many faced the fact that when installing the module, you were given "Wrong file type"

In theory, after loading the *.ocmod.zip module through the admin panel, it should unpack into the necessary directories and write information to the database. In this case, in the menu item Modifiers, we will see the same modifier. And everything would be fine, if not pre-configuring FTP, etc.

But this is not a hindrance. Installing the old fashioned way.

    1. We take our archive, which, for example, is called
    opencart-2-3-x-feofan.net.ocmod.zip

    2. Unpack it and see necessary files: install.xml file and upload folder
If there are install.php and install.sql files, then it will be necessary to execute the code from the install.php file and possibly import the install.sql file via phpmyadmin

    3. Copy everything from the upload folder to the root of the site

    4. Go to Menu - Modules - Install Extensions and load the ocmod.xml file.
The file extension must be exactly .ocmod.xml, For example install.ocmod.xml

    5. In the Menu - Modules - Modifiers, check if it has appeared or not.
Click the plus sign to turn it on and then click Update. We look at the log at the very end, if everything is fine.

And in the end we get installed extensions without setting up the FTP admin panel.
If the required item or functionality does not appear, check the log for errors.

    Alternate modifier setting method

    4. rename the install.xml file to, for example, opencart-2-3-x-export-import.ocmod.xml and copy it to the feofan.net\system\ directory

    5. In modifiers, click update. Menu - Modules - Modifiers
(in the list of modifiers manual installation we won't see anything but the log!!, but the modifiers themselves are always at hand, and not in the database)

The output is all files must end with .ocmod.zip

Good afternoon, dear readers, today I want to tell you how to change the file type in windows in a minute, this topic can be considered a continuation of the previous post about file associations in windows 10, as it complements it. In my example, we will consider such operating systems as Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and of course the top ten, where now without it. I sure that this information will be very useful for novice computer users, especially if your computer has been attacked by a virus that has changed all file associations.

    File Format Types

Let's understand first what types of file formats are. It is logical that every program installed on your computer, no matter in what operating system opens its own file, and it is logical that other files from third party programs she doesn't need it, because they have their own openers. It follows from this that the files must somehow differ from each other, and identify themselves for a particular application. They didn’t think for a long time and came up with the idea that each file of a certain program would have its own format or extension. The extension is what comes after the dot at the end of the file name.

    File Format Type Examples

Here are the most common file formats:

    • Sound > have the extension mp3, wav, flac
    • Videos > have the format avi, mkv, mpeg and so on
    • Executables > have the format exe, msi
    • Archive > rar, zip format
    • Text > doc, docx, txt, pdf, etc.

There are a lot of such categories, each of them contains its own types of file extensions, you can see all of them in the note above about associations, I advise you to read it. There are times when you need to quickly change the file format, for various reasons, a simple example is you have a picture with a png extension, and on the site avatars for uploading to a profile, for example, can only be in jpeg format what to do, you can of course convert it online, but there is not always the Internet, so we come to the point that we must understand and figure out how to change the file type in windows.

I want to note that to convert formats, you need to use either online services or specialized software, the examples below are for guidance only

Let's move on to practice and figure out how to change the file type in windows 10. Suppose I need to change the txt extension, in any operating system of the Microsoft family, the extensions are hidden and it is logical that if you need to change something with standard tools, then you need to enable functionality.

All we need is to open the explorer, you can do this by clicking on the folder icon to the right of the start button.

Clicking on the View menu and checking the File name extensions checkbox will help us change the format.

Please note that here you can enable hidden files Windows 10. We check everything, our txt file. All now by selecting it and pressing the F2 key, you can change the format to the desired one, erase the txt and replace it. A real case when this can come in handy, you write some kind of script in txt, and then change the format to bat or cmd and it becomes a script.

As you can see, changing the file format in Windows is no more difficult than saying one, two, and three, but don't think that this always works, you won't be able to take an mp3 and turn it into an avi, there are no miracles. This method is useful, for example, when editing the Hosts file in the system, since it does not have an extension by default, and there are cases when editing it, the user is prompted to save it already in txt format, which is not always visible if display is not enabled.

Let's further analyze how to change the file type in windows 8, this version a little older and not so common around the world, in my opinion it was rejected in vain at one time, if there weren’t dozens of it, but it’s not about that 🙂 . By default, Windows 8.1 does not display extensions in the system, for example, I have a picture and I need to change its extension, but it is not visible in the title.

To fix this, do the following, open windows explorer(any local disk on my computer). You will have such a convenient menu on top, in it you need to go to the View tab and put this checkbox, File name extensions. This action will allow the operating system to enable the display of formats or whatever file extensions.

Let's take a look at our file again and, lo and behold, it has appeared in the name.jpg, this is its format.

Now, what you need to do, there are two options, the first is right-clicking and choosing the rename item from the context menu, but you are already an advanced user, so you know that everything is done the same way if you press the F2 key on the selected file. Next, you will have the opportunity to edit it, erase the old format and write a new one, for example png, in the window where you are asked to confirm the format change, click Yes.

As a result, you got the desired extension. As you can see, a couple of mouse clicks. Now you know how to change the file format in Windows 8.

Very often people tell me that the article is misleading, that it doesn’t work like nothing. Here I want to note that people didn’t read everything to the end, and apparently they didn’t pay attention to what I wrote that it doesn’t always work and not with all formats, but in other cases you need to use special services and converters to change the file type.

I will give an example from life, in public institutions it is very often, until now, Word 2003, and it has the .doc format, and in most offices MS Office 2013 is already installed, which by default has the Word * .docx file type, which in 2003 will not work, and so the above method easily changes formats, and you can easily transfer the desired format for a user with an old office.

And so in the eight we figured it out, let's see how to change the file type in windows 7, here it is slightly in a different place.

The described method for the seven through the control panel is suitable for the ten and eight

I have an archive file, it has the rar format, I need to change the file extension in windows 7 to zip, this is also such an archiver. By default, the seven also does not display formats, so she needs help with this, so to speak, slightly tweak it 🙂.

We have two methods with you, each of the below should open the Folder Options snap-in. The first method is to open Start > Control Panel.

In the upper right corner in the View item, select large icons, after which we look for the Folder Options icon, it is its capabilities that will allow us change file type in windows.

You can also get to the Folder Options menu using this method, open my computer, as you can see from above there is no additional buttons.

We press the magic Alt key and in the end you will open a hidden menu. In it, click on the Tools button and then Folder Options. Choose which method you like best.

Go to the View tab, where you need to uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. By removing it, you will be able to change the file type in windows.

We all check our archive, select it, press F2 or right-click to rename, and set the desired extension.
